heartland; underdog
Life is like this

heartland; underdog is a collection of people, places + projects coming out of st. louis, missouri. we hope h;u can become a platform for compassion, empathy + inspiration. our goal is to connect st. louisans. we create intersections and bridge gaps. the stories you see on h;u are curated, photographed and written by ashley kuenstler + lindsay pattan.

do you remember the moment you realized you weren't the smartest person in the room? heartland; underdog celebrates the people who are smarter, more creative + cooler than we are, and the projects they've gifted the world.

we live, work + play in st. louis. we really love the midwest, especially stl, and we hope our stories make you love the heartland too. if you want to visit, send an email to info@heartlandunderdog.com + we'll make sure your itinerary is 100%.

we work in photography, advertising, media + business, spend a lot of time helping other people do cool stuff + sit on our fair share of community boards + committees. it's our passion. if you need help on a project, it never hurts to ask, so shoot us an email.

design - all kinds of it - is important to us. seriously, the fashion kind, the interior kind, the fine arts kind, the performing kind. we love it + we live for it, so send us your projects, your cool city loft + your tattoos. we want to see it.

we think your brand is really cool, but sending us stuff doesn't warrant a post. if you want to collaborate, let's come up with something interesting to do together.

what projects have you worked on?
this is our project. welcome. we'll also be launching a few socially charged community projects in 2015, and we hope you'll join us. stay tuned.

why st. louis?
st. louis is home to some of the country's most talented chefs, makers, journalists, entrepreneurs, fortune 500s, and the list goes on... we're here to tell the stories of the people who make st. louis a great place, to live, work + play.

what's the deal with H;U?
h;u has been around for a few years now, with mostly filler content because taking pictures is fun + we have issues with over-committing ourselves. now, h;u is a place for stories. we think it will stay that way, but the cool thing about having a blog is that you can do whatever you want to with it. we hope you'll stick around long enough to see h;u grow into something amazing.

why do you post political content?
see, we care about people. not just their paintings + their startups, but their rights + quality of life. why? well, it would suck to not have rights because you're a ________ person. don't you think it's weird that an adjective dictates your quality of life? we think it's pretty terrible + since you can do whatever you want with your blog (thank you, internet), we're going to talk about it sometimes. we will also be launching several socially charged projects this year, and we hope you'll check back for more information. most importantly, we hope you'll get involved!

will you feature me?
maybe! send us some information on you + your project or someone cool you think should be featured + we'll take a look at it as soon as we can!

what's on your resume?
we talk about other people because we think other people are really cool. but, since you asked... here are some rad things about lindsay + ashley

lindsay pattan | @lindsay_pattan | co-editor + creative director Lindsay, founded Heartland; Underdog in 2010 as a way to learn more about what was happening in the blogosphere and to casually record the occasional thought. After two years of searching for a (blog) partner, she found the incredible Ashley Kuenstler. Since Ashley joined the H;U team, the duo has begun to tell the story of St. Louis in a new way. Lindsay dates Patrick and loves on Sophie. They all live in a historic Downtown loft full of handcrafted furniture, locally sourced vintage and St. Louis-made goods. Disgusting, they know. Lindsay founded Handmade Happy Hour (now Saint Louis Made) and spends her weekends exploring STL in search of new makers, old buildings + the perfect waffle. Lindsay is the Marketing Manager & Digital Strategist at ALIVE Magazine, where she focuses primarily on digital product development and innovation. Lindsay is an active young friends board member for the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Downtown STL, Inc. and is a member of the Social Media Opportunities Group for the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission. Her passions include awareness and accessibility of the arts in St. Louis City, breaking down barriers for the small businesses that make up St. Louis’ unique culture and advocating for the underdog. Lindsay is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Midwest Influencer Network and a member of the executive team at ALIVE Media Group. Her work history includes corporate PR, social media, localized marketing and events.

ashley kuenstler | ashley kuenstler photography | co-editor + director of photography Ashley lives for the little things: Driving with the windows down, great lighting, the surprise curly fry amidst all the regular ones, writing in notebooks for the first time, the smell of barbecue, and catching people dancing or singing in their cars at stoplights. As much as the little things fuel her creativity and love of life, it’s telling other's stories through her words and images that do it the most. She’s worked as a journalist and photographer for seven years and will never say ‘no’ to a bourbon on the rocks. She is terrified of cats and clowns and would most definitely suffer a heart attack if subjected to a cat circus. Her refrigerator is always full of good cheese, she has a soft spot for the Delta blues, and she sill knows all the dance moves to Nsync’s “Tearin’ Up My Heart.” Especially if she’s been drinking.
